Are Central Scotland Police Recruiting for Police Constables?
Yes
I’m thinking of applying to join the police in the future. What type of employment experience would you recommend?
There are no specific jobs that will give you all the required experience. Any employment where you are working face to face with the public would be beneficial. Experience of challenging situations where you need to make decisions, use initiative, work in a team and develop your interpersonal skills would also be useful.
Do I need to hold a full driving licence to apply?
No, however you would be expected to pass a driving test on joining.
If unsuccessful, how long do I need to wait before I re-apply?
Normally 12 months, however each application will be reviewed on its individual merits.
How many times can I sit the Standard Entrance Test?
You are allowed three attempts to sit and pass the test. If you fail at the third attempt, then you are excluded from applying again.
Why can I only sit the Standard Entrance Test three times?
The Scottish Executive sets the exam. There are currently only three papers in use.
Where can I get a sample of the test paper?
You can download test papers from the resources page of this website.
Do I need specific qualifications to join?
There are no formal qualifications required to join the Force, however candidates must be successful throughout the selection process. This includes passing the Standard Entrance Test, Assessment Day, Panel Interview and showing competence in written and spoken English.
I have an on-going application with another Force. Can I still apply?
No. If you are unsuccessful with the other Force, then you must wait 12 months before applying to Central.
I have a previous conviction. Would this stop me from applying to become a Police Constable with your Force?
All previous convictions are looked at on an individual basis and assessed in context with your application to join. We would encourage you to discuss your concerns with our Recruitment Department prior to submitting your application. Having a previous conviction for a minor matter may not necessarily prevent you from applying.
What type of previous convictions will affect my application?
The individual circumstances of each application are considered. All convictions, including conditional offer of Fixed Penalty tickets and parking tickets, must be disclosed. Failure to disclose convictions will result in your application being rejected.
A family member has previous convictions. Will this affect my application?
Each set of circumstances will be looked at on an individual basis.
Is there a height restriction?
No.
I wear glasses/contact lenses. Can I still apply?
Yes. You will need to have an eyesight acuity form completed by an optician and submitted with your application to ensure your eyesight is within the required limits.
I have had laser eye surgery. Can I still apply?
Some forms of laser eye surgery are acceptable. For further information please contact our Health and Wellbeing Department.
I am at university completing a degree. Can I apply for the Accelerated Careers Development Programme (ACDP)?
To apply, you must have completed a degree in any discipline – in addition to meeting all of the standard entrance requirements for the Police Force. You can apply for ACDP with your initial application, during your probation or in-service.
I have a medical condition. Can I still apply?
Yes. All applicants are assessed according to their individual circumstances and with regards to relevant disability discrimination legislation.
I’m currently serving with HM Forces, when can I apply?
You must be within six months of discharge before we will accept an application.
How long does the recruitment process take?
The process normally takes between three to six months, but can take longer depending upon the number of officers we are recruiting at any particular time.
Can I work part-time?
Yes, you can apply to work on a part-time basis, however all training must be attended on a full-time basis.
Can I apply for a Specialist Department?
A probationary period of two years must be served prior to applying for any department.
